When you watch a video you are streaming a series for data packets which must be received in the proper sequence. Sometimes packets within a single transfer take different routes (resulting in packet 57 arriving after packet 68 arrives) or don't arrive properly and need to be retransmitted. Buffering is stacking up a bunch of the received packets before playing them in order to resolve some of these issues. Without buffering, any errors in transmission would go straight to your screen. |
